The Texas Association of Centers for Independent Living is putting together a group of consumer advocates who will be very active in their respective communities and at the Capitol in the next year – through the session of the Texas Legislature that ends in June 2011.
TACIL will share legislative priorities and strategies and to encourage consumers to become a part of this elite advocacy team, modeled after the very successful Silver Haired Legislature. We want a few advocates from each region of Texas to become a part of this very important team.
TACIL will work with them to get and keep them up to date on legislative issues, from the very basics (Advocacy 101) to some of the more complex legislative issues facing people with disabilities in the current interim and upcoming session.
Their activities, both within their respective districts and with their legislators during the session will help to put TACIL and each Center for Independent Living in Texas at an elevated level with a higher profile among decision makers. This does not necessarily mean spending every moment on these issues - we want our passionate advocates to work smarter - not harder! And TACIL will be there as a resource all the way!
Please contact a few consumers you know to see if they might be interested in becoming a member of this elite team of advocates - the level of their participation can be negotiated, given their desire and schedule.
