Class Descriptions

Advanced Computers: This class requires that you have some experience with computers. It will focus on word processing, using removable storage, email basics, and the use of common internet sites. You will also learn how to use the Apple Mace computer in this class. (SPACE LIMITED)

Beginning Computers: This class is designed for individual with very little or no experience with computers. You will learn, the basics of a computer. The class will focus on the hardware components of a computer system and provide opportunities to learn about commonly used software. (SPACE LIMITED)

Cooking Healthy: Learn about meal preparation, oven and kitchen safety by cooking and sampling healthy foods from the United States. This 6 weeks the class will cook holiday dishes. (SPACE LIMITED).

Employment 101: To learn about the world of work; utilize the computer labe to develop independent living skills to prepare for future employment. Learn the current state of the job market, disability -friendly employers in the Austin area, Ticket-to-Work program, DARS, career fields, and what employers want from employees. (SPACE LIMITED).

Managing Your Own Place: This class will focus on how to manage your own place in the community and to be aware of your rights and advocacy.

Money Management: Weather you are new to money management or you simply just want to make better use of your income, this class is for you. It includes hands-on-practice and budgeting exercises to help with basic math in order to enhance your understanding of the use of money.

Peer Counseling Instruction: If you have a disability, you may be the best counselor for someone else with a disability. Learn how to support your peers through listening and sharing experiences. Learn how to face the challenges of relationships and how to advocate for yourself and others.

Personal Safety: Learn to be safe as you go about your life - in the workplace, at school, at home and in the community. Learn assertiveness skills, avoiding danger, recognizing abuse and practicing safety strategies.

Sexuality and Relationships: Learn more about healthy adult sexuality and how to avoid unsafe behaviors and violence as you interact with the people in your life.

Social Recreation: Develop skills for accessing and evaluating recreational opportunities. Grow socially as you develop skills to advocate for people with disabilities in the area of recreation and leisure.
