Class Descriptions

Accessing Music and the Arts in Austin: Be inspired as we explore the arts in Austin. Learn how to overcome barriers as you advocate for yourself in accessing entertainment in your community. We will attend concerts and explore opportunities to participate in the visual and performing arts.

Assistive Technology - Managing Your Life and Money: If you don't understand technology and are wondering how you can be more effective at daily tasks in your home, workplace and community, this class is for you.

Beginning Computers: Focus on learning the basics of the computer including the hardware components of a computer system and the software in MS Office. Make an impression in your community and at work.

Managing Your Home and Kitchen: Want to truly live independently? An introductory class to look at what it takes to run your own home. Learn about balancing a budget. making your home accessible, organizing your food system including shopping and food preperation. Yes, we will cook.

Peer Counseling Instruction: If you have experienced a disability, you may be the best counselor for someone else with a disability. Learn how to support your peers through listening and sharing and to face the challenges of relationships as you advocate for yourself and others.

Personal Safety: Learn to be safe as you go about your life - in the workplace, at school, at home and in the community. Learn assertiveness skills, avoiding danger, recognizing abuse and practicing safety strategies.

Money Management - Personal Finance: Learn to put together a household budget with the goal of managing your own finances as head of household including management of personal checking and savings accounts.

Personal Safety: Learn to be safe as you go about your life - at the bus stop, in the workplace, at school, at home, and in the community. Learn assertiveness skills, avoiding danger, recognizing abuse and practicing safety strategies.

Sexuality and Relationships: Learn more about healthy adult sexuality and how to avoid unsafe behaviors and violence as you interact with the people in your life.

Social Recreation: Develop skills for accessing and evaluating recreational opportunities. Grow socially as you develop skills to advocate for people with disabilities in the area of recreation and leisure.

Your Life/Your Health: Explore fundamental concepts of wellness and whole health such as nutrition, exercise, stress/grief management and peer counseling. Become empowered to create a purposeful lifestyle that contributes not only to your individual health but to that of your community.
