Job Club Update
This fall Job Club members made considerable progress towards their employment goals. Two of our members were engaged as part-time instructors here at ARCIL, another member found a great job in the community, and two others began receiving services from DARS. In our meetings we have begun perfecting our interviewing skills by participating in mock interviews. We have also improved upon our computer job-search skills by registering for websites that specifically cater to finding jobs for individuals with disabilities.
Finally, we have bonded as a support group, celebrating each other’s accomplishments and working together to find job leads.
Job Club meets on Thursdays from 9-10. Anyone who is interested in joining can speak to Emily Wolinsky, Consumer Services Coordinator and she will provide you with information and an application.
The “Fun City” Fundraising Committee Made It To Sea World In San Antonio, Texas
The “Fun City” fundraising committee is a group of consumers (individuals with disabilities who receive services from ARCIL Inc.) in the Austin location that use ARCIL facilities to plan social recreation activities in the community. Some of the activities are in the community and some activities include out of town travel. Jakki Chambliss, Transition Services Coordinator states, that the “Fun City” fundraising committee met their goal and made it to Sea World in San Antonio on September 30, 2011. The “Fun City” committee received support from the ARCIL Inc. Board members and raised money on their own. It took five months and three fundraising activities to raise enough money to make the trip. Fundraising activities included;
• A Car Wash fundraiser in May 2011
• A Raffle Ticket fundraiser in June 2011
• An In-House Beverages sales that began in July
There was a total of 16 individuals that participated in the activities at Sea World that consisted of; 10 consumers, 2 attendants, 1 staff, 1 assistant, and 2 parents who went along to offer support.
The “Fun City” committee would like to give “A Big Thank You To The Arcil Inc. Board Members” for their support for helping to make this trip possible. We had a wonderful time. It was a trip that will always be remembered by everyone who participated.
“Fun City” Committee Holiday Event
The “FUN CITY” Fundraising committee celebrated their 1st Holiday event at “Dave & Buster’s Restaurant” in Austin, Texas on December 2, 2011 from money that they raised during this year.
It is true what they say at Dave & Buster’s to “feed your fun” and “eat and play.” There were a total of (16) people that participated. They enjoyed having an entrée and a $10 game card. It was a big success and no cost to members of the fundraising committee. It is time to get involved and join the “Fun City” committee.
Community excursions are community based activities designed to re-enforce IL skills taught at ARCIL Inc. People who participate will gain practical experiences.
The “Fun City” Lunch Plate Fundraiser
The lunch plate fundraiser was the last fundraising activity for 2011. It was held at Wal-Mart in Austin, Texas in October. They sold hot dogs, potato chips, and sodas. It was a great success, says Jakki Chambliss. Dedrick Harris received a $10 gift certificate for selling the most lunch plate tickets.
ARCIL Inc. San Marcos
The Open House held in November announcing the new Accessible Computer Lab in the San Marcos office, was a great success and enjoyed by all. Consumers and various Community Organizations attended to see what services were offered in the new lab. Those organizations in attendance were Hays I Can consumers, Hill Country Mental Health Development Disability services (formerly Hill Country MHMR), Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors from the San Marcos branch of the Department of Assistive & Rehabilition Services, Luling Care Center, Career & Employment Specialists from Workforce Solutions, Texas Veterans Commission, Greater San Marcos Youth Council, and other consumers receiving ARCIL services. We are looking forward to consumers utilizing services for the enhancement of their independent goals. The hours of operation for the lab are as follows:
9:00 – 11:00 & 12:00 – 4:00 M-F

Computer Classes
The ARCIL Inc. Round Rock staff plan to start a new computer class soon. Classes will cover basic typing, using the mouse and internet navigation, said IL Skills Coordinator Andrew Gregory who will be leading the classes. “The Class is possible thanks to the center’s sizable computer lab,” he added.
Times for the classes are to be determined, but they probably meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Andrew said. Some consumers have expressed interest in gaining computer skills, and this smaller, target class will facilitate learning computers more readily that the larger IL skills classes which meet on those mornings, he explained.
I have been coming to ARCIL for several years now. There are times when I cannot even leave my front door, but ARCIL understands my situation and always accepts me when I come back no matter how long I’m gone.
The very first time I went to ARCIL I learned about looking for red flags in relationships, ways to handle inappropriate behavior from others and how to stay safe. This class lead me to other connections in my social life.
Lately, I have been coming to ARCIL for computer instruction, to learn how to operate my personal computer. I learned how to open and close programs, navigate the computer, pay bills online. I’m looking forward to learning about new things on the computers. I’m not great at reading or writing, but Andrew helps me a lot. He can figure what I’m trying to say when I don’t have the words.
I’m looking forward to the future with ARCIL.
