Aquarena Center has several exciting exhibits that focus on historical and cultural aspects of the area as well as the endangered plant and animal life in the San Marcos River.
The freshwater springs that create the San Marcos River were formed millions of years ago by the Balcones Fault, a fracture in the earth's crust. These spring waters pump over 150 million gallons of water each day. Conquistadors found the bubbling springs centuries ago and Spanish explorers gave the name San Marcos to the river in the early 1700's. Many Native Americans believe the headwaters of the San Marcos River Park the location of their "Garden of Eden" and the beginning of their ancestry.
On August 10, 1947, Paul Rogers initiated the development of Aquarena Springs Resort in its current form by launching the first glass bottom boat, an oversized, canvas topped rowboat equipped with a small glass panel in the bottom. The glass bottom boats were followed in 1951 by the first underwater submarine theatre performance, with many of the other attractions added thereafter. Today, owned by TSU, the resort has been transformed into an educational ecotourism center that will house the planned Texas Rivers Center.

The Endangered Species Exhibit and Aquarium at Aquarena Center gives visitors the opportunity to see both endangered and protected species, many of which are found only in the San Marcos River.
The Aquarium houses four federally protected species; the San Marcos Salamander, the Fountain Darter, the Texas blind salamander, and the San Marcos gambusia. In addition, our 5400-gallon aquarium is home to several other native species of fish including the Guadalupe bass, the channel catfish and the spotted gar. Visitors can learn more about these endangered species by viewing educational interactive video displays. It is the center's goal for visitors to not only learn about the endangered species, but learn how to protect these precious resources as well.

Aquarena Center features many of the artifacts found during the archaeological dig initiated by the late Joel L Shiner, Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University in 1978. During this evacuation, strong indications were found to support the fact that this could be the site of the oldest continuous habitation in North America. Findings substantiate that the headwaters of the San Marcos River have been continually inhabited for the last 12,000 years.

The EmilyAnn Theatre has two exciting offerings for those new to the area. The first is a gala festival held in April every year, celebrating life and spring, called Butterfly Day. Each year, hundreds of butterflies are raised by school children in the area, then released to freedom on this special day of remembrance for the daughter of the theatre's founders, Ann and Norm Rolling, Emily Ann Rolling, who was killed in a car accident on RR 12 a few years ago. The festival features clowns, storytellers, puppet shows, songs, dance and much more.
For Summer fun, the EmilyAnn Theatre is the only theatre in the United States with an accredited high school summer Shakespearean drama program. Built by a large volunteer labor force, the Theatre is the perfect outdoor venue for concerts, plays, reunions and parties. The large stage and seating areas as well as the shaded picnic area, puppet area and hilltop lookout make the Theatre's five-acre setting the ideal place for any gathering.
Authorities believe that the headwaters of the beautiful and unique, spring fed San Marcos River is the oldest continuously inhabited spot in the hemisphere.
The Southwestern Indian tribes believe the headwaters of the San Marcos River at Aquarena Center to be their " Garden of Eden" as described in stories handed down from generation to generation. Indian relics have been found here from 12,000 years ago to verify the river's place as an origin of human habitation in the northern hemisphere.
A constant 72-degree water temperature and the year round flow provide the habitat for several life forms not found anywhere else in the world. Texas wild rice along with multitudes of turtles, crystal clear water and a large variety of birds and fish all contribute to the river's reputation for special beauty. Fish, canoe, kayak or tube your way down one of the most majestic rivers in the world.

Second weekend in June, 9 a.m. start.
(Spectators are welcome for the takeoff of the race at Aquarena Center)
A Texas tradition since 1963, the Water Safari is 260 miles of grueling, nonstop paddling from San Marcos to Seadrift, Texas. Legend has it that Frank Brown and Bill "Big Willie" George made a bet with some friends back around 1962 that they could take their "V" bottom boat, without a motor, from San Marcos to Corpus Christi. They accomplished their mission in about 30 days and decided that other people should have the opportunity to enjoy the same trip. So in 1963 they set up the Texas Water Safari.
The race ends at Seadrift with a rousing welcome at the finish line. First boats should begin arriving at the coastal community in the early morning hours on Monday, though some have broken records for break-neck speed in years past and made it in less than 30 hours, shaving a few weeks off of the original finish time back in 1962. All boats must be accounted for or in Seadrift by noon Wednesday.

Let the "kiddos" unleash that mass energy at the Playscape at Children's Park on CM Allen Drive at City Park.
"Dedicated to the child in us all", San Marcos' community built playscape is one of the largest of its kind in the nation. First proposed in 1988, by a group of mothers, it was championed from the onset by the Junior Service League and later by 6 additional "partners." The project was headed by a grassroots citizen group, the Friends of the Playscape. Design and construction management was by Robert Leathers and Associates of Ithaca, N.Y., whose ideas for the structure's unique design were gathered from some 800 San Marcos schoolchildren. Fifteen months of intense organizing raised almost $120,000 in cash and materials. In November 1992, 4373 adults and 1398 kids - every age, every walk of life - turned out for six extraordinary days of dawn to late night construction. That remarkable community event is commemorated annually the second Saturday in November when all are invited to help maintain the facility, and in doing so, reaffirm the unwavering love of this town for its children. Playscape is open all year round with night time lighting. Restroom and telephone facilities on site.
Leave San Marcos behind and journey out Ranch Road 12 towards Wimberley pass up the juncture of RR12 which takes you into Wimberley and continue straight on Highway 32 to Highway 183, then turn right to Blanco. Just a few miles up the road you'll encounter a beautiful view of the Texas Hill Country. Stop at the roadside park and marvel at the beautiful expanse ahead of you, hills and valleys as far as the eye can see. It's a site to behold! Don't forget the camera! Great place to take point-and-shoot portraits suitable for enlarging! Continue through picturesque Blanco to the juncture with Highway 290.
Turn right toward Austin and then turn right again in the town of Dripping Springs onto Ranch Road 12 and return to San Marcos. You'll be traveling through the most beautiful part of the Central Texas Hill Country.
To reach Belvin Street, a district replete with restored Victorian homes, drive south on Hopkins, turn right on Blanco, left to enter Belvin Street. Within a two block area, Belvin contains a concentration of homes built in the 1880's, lovingly restored by private owners. Belvin Street was placed on the National Register in 1983.
