Through March 2006, in Travis and Hays Counties, the Health and Human Services Commission has a three-month pilot program of a new system for enrolling Texans in public benefits. This includes Food Stamps, Medicaid, Children's Health Insurance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and the state' Long Term Care programs.
The program is testing an online application and the use of privately-run call centers to help people apply for Food Stamps, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF cash assistance). If the pilot is successful, the system will expand to other areas of the state beginning in April.
