In October 2002, the federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA), the most sweeping election reform in over 40 years, was passed into law. Provisions of this act include increasing accessibility of polling places, and ensuring the right to a secret ballot for ALL voters.
The Coalition of Texans with Disabilities (CTD), CTD member organizations and The Texas Secretary of State's Office are working together to ensure that information about this important civil rights legislation reaches Texans with disabilities all around the state. VOTEXAS (www.votetexas.org) is a part of the state's comprehensive response to federal HAVA legislation. VOTEXAS is an informational source for Texas voters regarding registering to vote, polling place and voting machine accessibility, voting rights, and new ID requirements.
CTD, along with local/regional disability organizations, is providing a 60-75 minute free HAVA training and accessible voting machine demonstration free of charge. Refreshments will be served.
